I love aspens in winter. Their beautiful white trunks and dark branches mingle with the dark shadows cast upon the white snow, creating a profound beauty that is best experienced in silence.

Trees in art, my favorite subject to paint! What's the allure? Since the beginning of time, in fact since Genesis, trees have been and continue to be used to teach us great lessons in life. In art, I've been inspired by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh's renderings of trees.

However, the single painting that influenced my love for telling stories by rendering trees was one painting that I saw when I was a teenager. In fact, I watched every stroke being applied as the soulful rendering of this one tree came to life. The artist was my mother. It was sort of a fantasy painting with a light that emanated deep inside the forest, where a little cabin rested comfortably in the woods. It wasn't until years after my mother passed away that I heard my Uncle relate what he thought my mother was portraying in this painting. It was the only time I ever saw my Uncle cry.

We move so quickly in this world. I hope as a people we don't forget to slow down and stop to enjoy the beauty and the meaning in our every day lives!

This classic still life of strawberries in a small format makes Berry Friends a natural for display in a kitchen, on a bookshelf, or most any place that could use a spot of color and a smile.

This oil on panel was a delight to paint, from life, because all the colors of the berries were right in front of me, along with the wonderful smell of the fresh fruit. I often paint from photographs, so this exercise reminded me that a three dimentional subject is a refreshing perspective to revisit.

This piece was inspired from a photograph that I took when I was in Taos, New Mexico. I came across a pocket of light that was brilliantly streaming through the woods and reflecting in the water before me. I decided to render this with thick paint, and a palette knife. I don't paint what's popular, what other people paint, or even what I think I should paint. I paint what I'm "driven" to paint. The elements and principles of design, color theory, and technique are instruments in the symphony but they are not the conductor, I am.

Perhaps that's why I titled this 36"x48" acrylic painting, "Symphonic Twilight". In the twilight hours, I was inspired by an aspen grove in New Mexico. There was just a hint of purple and I just ran with it! If there is just a hint of light in the room, this painting just glows.

Milton New York Apple Orchard by Jill Saur

I'll never forget this commissioned painting and where it went when I lived in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This is a 40"x30" watercolor snow scene of an apple orchard and barn. This barn had been in the same family for three generations. It was owned by a young man engaged to his lovely fiance. She commissioned this painting for him as a wedding gift.

Before I could even finish this painting, there was a terrible fire that destroyed this historic structure. This rendering of their beloved apple orchard was received with tears.

I call them "The Giving Trees", because they are deeply connected to one another under the ground. They are even able to grow a new tree from the offshoot of one of their roots. Although we are connected to other people in so many different ways, we all must choose the path that we are to personally follow.

I own a fixer home in Texas. I put it up for sale in the "need to remodel" stage because it is located in an area that has recently zoned Commercial and my thoughts were that if someone wanted to remodel the little house into an office, they'd want to change the bathroom and kitchen to fit their needs.

But the home did not sale. I think it was kismet that it had not. It probably meant that I needed to finish what I started. So these past couple of weeks I've been working on getting the house fixed up. Unfortunately I don't have very many tools nor body strength nor the know-how to do everything. And because it had been vacant the first thing I needed to do was dispose of the dead bugs and that is NOT the easiest task for me. ick ick ick...

This painting is one I did just before the remodel job; it was a commission and yes, very similar. I was very honored to be asked to paint this angel, not just once, twice but three times. This is the four one and angel has brown hair in this one.

Swans are so graceful looking, and I love that they are all white. I often use strong value contrasts in my paintings and this certainly fits the bill (no pun intended..)

This is actually a Mute Swan, and one can tell by the orange bill. Trumpet Swans have all black bills.

The background color is a combination of purple and green. It took me a while and a bit of color mixing to finally get this wonderful, warm brown.

It’s sometimes fun to experiment a little. I applied some gold leaf to this little still life. Having a background in watermedia, I have mixed different elements together to create depth and texture, so I wondered how it would look to add a little gold to this canvas. Who says you can’t jazz up an oil painting?!

The result is a mixed media partnership between paint and metal, giving the strawberry a little more glitz!

Last year, Tom and I went to Estes Park, Colorado. It is one of our treasured National Parks that I hope to return to one day. If you ever get a chance to visit, be sure you spend a day up at Bear Lake! Tom and I went at least two or three times. We came away with some incredible photos for me to use for subject matter to paint. This 11"x14" acrylic painting, "Autumn Inspiration" is inspired by one of my walks up at Bear Lake. The aspens were just beginning to change. The brilliant hues of the quaking leaves, against the azure sky, captured my spirit. I suppose that's why we went back two days later to do some more photo shoots and take in the extraordinary beauty of this magical wonderland.

UGA Arch

The UGA arch is a well-known landmark at the University of Georgia. The Arch is a cast iron representation of the seal of the state of Georgia. The three pillars stand for Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation, which is the state motto of Georgia. This arch is considered to be the gateway to the University.

My watercolor painting, "Three Pillars Of The Arch", is available in a 14"x10" limited edition giclee on archival, hand-made watercolor paper. It frames out to be a 20"x16" painting. I'm so proud of the company that I use to make reproductions. It is just about impossible to tell the original from the giclee!

Every year, during the winter months of January and February, I get Goldfinches at my house. In order to encourage them to visit, my husband puts our Christmas tree on the deck and we attach bird feeders to it.

Last year I got lots of great photos of these birds, so I can paint them doing their natural thing. This particular painting is on a linen panel and I like the firm support of it.

Part of any process is practice. I want to improve the "flow" of lines in my paintings, so my solution is to keep newsprint and willow sticks on hand. Then sketch whatever is near and doesn't move for at least a few minutes. This cute plush pup was perfect for the exercise!

In September I went out into the back yard and took pictures of the muscadines as they were approaching their peak of ripeness...just before the squirrels came and ate. every. one.

In past years I've made muscadine jam. It's a pain to make but the results are worth the effort. It has a distinctive flavor and the smell has an aroma that make me remember picking these grapes as a child. There would be a little pile of skins on the ground and a sticky residue pretty much all over my face. Ah, childhood.

This painting is on a linen panel. I recently started using panels to paint smaller works. One thing I really like about the panels is their archival quality. These babies will last forever, won't warp, and are easy to frame.

I am counting down to my top favorite paintings of 2011. Each one represents some goal I accomplished this year. This painting is special to me because it was accepted into the IAPS's 18th Juried Exhibition in Albuquerque this past June. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the IAPS convention and see the show in person. I now have earned 3 points towards the IAPS Master Circle! The other reason I chose this painting is because one of my goals was to work with my underpaintings and try not to cover them completely with pastel. I want them to guide me. This painting has an oil stain underpaintings and you can see how I managed to leave a lot of the interesting drips and spiderwebs. I'd like to do more of this in the coming year!

Welcome to 2012! One of the things I have vowed to do this year is to post more regularly on this site!

I also plan on having a story for each painting, meaning I will keep a log of the process I am using, as it changes from painting to painting.

I know I put two canvases together with gesso and let them set up for a couple of hours and then pulled them apart. I have also started using a blow torch between layers to bring a hidden layer out. I have also experimented with using gunpowder on canvas, I had previously used it to burn paper for collage because it makes a very nice lacelike effect. I found it you spritz the canvas lightly, you can put the gunpowder on top of it and it won't burn through the canvas. Yes, I think my "day" job has gotten pretty stressful, because I have enjoyed experimenting this year.

I promise you will see me around more in 2012!!!!!

Had to find my blingiest bulldog to ring in the new year with. This dawg is hunting a party and then a bowl game. Perhaps Coach Richt would appreciate if we reverse that order and play great in the bowl game on Monday and then party! Go Dawgs!

This bulldog was put through his paces with several backgrounds. I kept changing it up like football plays in a scrimmage. Jim came in for the final touchdown play with a few strategic smears in all that gorgeous paint I had down. Loved it and glad I had help getting where I was trying to go!

Thanks to all of you that have been a special part of my journey this year. Happy New Year to everyone and I look forward to another amazing year growing as an artist.

This Bulldog Elf (wanna be) has all kinds of wishes for the holiday season for all our friends and followers. I am so thankful for all the fellowship, love and support I have had along the way this year. I started the year at a Leslie and Dreama workshop and ended it winning a consultation from Leslie in her 12 Days of Christmas Give Away. I am thrilled and thankful and just when I am ready to launch a new website. Suhh-weet!!

I have been on a warp speed journey and am so thankful to have gotten to learn from teachers like Nancy Franke and Carol Marine and am now in a Jim Richards mentoring group. The consistent immersed instruction over the last 6 months has made an incredible difference in my art. I can't wait to see what 2012 brings and look forward to sharing the journey with you all.

I have always loved early mornings out on the golf course just admiring the natural beauty and watching the day get started. Favorite place to do that is on the Seaside Golf Course at Sea Island. Many of you may recognize their signature flagstick which is a red wicker basket. This painting is one of my favorites and I am really pleased with the way it turned out. I had done a small study and worked from that along with teacher Jim Richards and learned so much.

This painting made me think of that Cat Stephens song. I think he said and sang it beautifully.

I figured I would post the bigger version from the study of the popcorn clouds over the marsh being as that was how I am working. Loved doing these back to back and working small to then larger. This water just draws you in and is gorgeous. I worked hard to get the different shifts in it. Jim and I talked about how important edges are and I went back and reread that chapter in the Carlson book- yes, they are! Look at those clouds and check out the shadows and edges in them. This is a Big Kernel of a Keeper and I hope someone loves it like I do. Check out the DPW auction above...they are fun!

My dog bowl is full. I was lucky enough to get some "real" photos of our UGA mascot approved by UGA friend, UGA Bulldog mascot owner and breeder, Sonny Seiler and taken by wonderful photographer Danny White. They are fabulous and I was beyond thrilled! Thanks to all for the help!

Using all white and tints is new for me. When I chose this subject (which is the top of a holiday salt shaker!) I knew there would be shadows and highlights to paint. As I sketched the form and became more familiar with the subject, I saw subtle pinks, blues, grays, browns and yellows. I mixed a tiny amount of each color with puddles of white paint and was amazed how more than a tiny amount can tint the puddle too much! Lesson learned :-).

I am happy with the progress of this palette knife painting. The tints are defining the contours of the bird nicely, and the texture is yummy!
